About the Family Life and Asthma Project

The Family Life and Asthma Project at Syracuse University studies how families of children with asthma adapt and cope with the daily challenges that asthma presents. To understand the "total" picture surrounding asthma and its effect on the family, this study examines several aspects of asthma management and family life. We look at family rituals such as mealtime, medication use, day-to-day emotions, and individual family strategies in dealing with asthma.

We know that having asthma can mean extra challenges, chores, and stressors. By talking with families dealing with asthma, we hope to gather effective strategies for other families who may be dealing with similar asthma-related challenges. The information and time our families provide is valuable not only to us, but to future families of children with asthma.

Head Start Families and Asthma Study

The Head Start Asthma Project is funded by the Administration for Children, Youth and Families. Its primary goal is to understand the challenges that families face with preschool age children in managing their asthma.

We aim to translate our findings into easy to understand strategies that can be shared with Head Start nurses and families. Mary Spagnola received a National Head Start Disseration Scholar Award to conduct the study with 80 families whose children are enrolled in area Head Start programs. Dr. Fiese serves as a National Head Start Dissertation mentor. Mary has worked closely with the Head Start P.E.A.C.E. organization to make this program a success.
