USA HIP involves a collaboration between a team of Indian and US scientists. Our work will completed at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore, India with samples of adults who are receiving care for a severe mental illness and/or substance abuse. In this population, the Indo-USA HIP has three primary aims: (a) to determine the prevalence and correlates of HIV, syphilis, Hepatitis B, and chlamydia; (b) to describe the sexual health practices and risk behavior; and (c) to test the feasibility and provide preliminary evidence of the efficacy of a brief, skills-based risk reduction program. Our secondary aims are to foster an international collaboration and to provide for training opportunities for talented Indian mental health professionals. The work is supported by a supplemental research award from the US National Institute of Mental Health (Grant # R01-MH54929). |
