Research Projects:

In addition to the SU Parent Project, we have a number of ongoing projects. Brief descriptions are provided below.

Early Autism Project
With funding from the Burton Blatt Institute and in collaboration with the Bureau of Special Children's Services of the Onondaga County Department of Health and the Oswego County Department of Health, we are investigating the patterns of early autism diagnosis in the county and family experiences during the diagnostic process.
Principal Investigator: Laura Lee McIntyre, PhD
County Collaborators: Linda Karmen (Onondaga County) and Tammy Thompson (Oswego County)
Research Team: : Leah Wildenger, Nicole Quintero, Aila Dommestrup & Nicki Neudorfer

Autism Sibling Study
Siblings are not often the focus of research studies or interventions. This study examines the adjustment of parents and siblings in families with and without children with autism. We are currently recruiting families with preschool-aged (2-5 years) children and older siblings (6-11 years).
Student Investigator: Nicole Quintero, MS
Faculty Investigator: Laura Lee McIntyre, PhD

Three Tier Model for Parent Training
This study examines varying levels of intensity (self-help guides, group classes, and individualized sessions) with parents who have toddlers and preschool-aged children with developmental delays. This project enhances the larger SU Parent Project by tailoring the parent interventions to the level of intensity and support needed by individual families. We are currently recruiting families with preschool-aged (2-5 years) children with developmental and/or behavioral concerns.
Student Investigator: Leah Brzuszkiewicz Phaneuf, MS
Faculty Investigator: Laura Lee McIntyre, PhD

Parent Perspectives on Education Study
Parent perspectives are not often considered when considering "quality" education. Schools often wish to increase parent involvement in education, yet may not consider their perspectives, experiences, and expectations for their child's education. We are investigating parents' perspectives on quality teaching and patterns of parent involvement in education for older children (3rd – 4th grade students).
Student Investigator: Niamh Doyle, BEd, BSc
Faculty Investigator: Laura Lee McIntyre, PhD

Transition to Kindergarten: An Examination of Child Socio-Emotional-Behavioral Outcomes
Transition to kindergarten is an important developmental milestone for children, families, and teachers. Adequate transition preparation may be crucial to maximize "transition success". Our goal is to investigate if transition preparation activities help young children make a smoother, more positive kindergarten transition.
Student Investigator: Leah Wildenger, BA
Faculty Investigator: Laura Lee McIntyre, PhD

Transition to Kindergarten: Family Involvement & Experiences
This study investigates family involvement and experiences of children transitioning to kindergarten in one school district in Central New York. Our goals are to identify ways to involve parents in kindergarten transition and strengthen home-school collaborations.
Principal Investigator: Laura Lee McIntyre, PhD
Co-Investigators: Tanya L. Eckert, PhD & Barbara H. Fiese, PhD
